Alan's delight at prestigious Sri Lankan 'Champion of Champions' surfing triumph

A surfer has been crowned with one of the most prestigious titles in the surfing calendar.

Alan Stokes, a professional surfer from Newquay in Cornwall, was named Sri Lanka Champion of Champions in the Surf Contest of the same name in Sri Lanka last week.

The UK Pro Surf Tour member was described as showing "stunning form" in three to four foot conditions to take the top spot on the podium at the competition which attracted surfers from all over the world.

Mr Stokes said: "I am ecstatic to have won this event, after coming second last year and in previous years, it feels likes it has been a long time coming.

"It has been really nice to have an event with great waves and a really cool atmosphere."

The swell decreased over the week, offering up some challenging surf for competitors to test their skills and demonstrate to the judges what they could do in the clean conditions.

The variety of moves and action on display was described by head judge Esther Spears as "definitely impressive – the best seen in many years".
She added: "This shows a promising time for British surfing."

The success did not stop there for Westcountry surfing. Stuart Campbell, 19, from Woolacombe in North Devon came third in the competition, while fourth place went to Reubyn Ash from Bude in Cornwall.
