The members of the Association of Sri Lankan Lawyers in the UK (ASLLUK) and the members of the Sri Lankan Medical and Dental Association in the UK (SLMDA) held their customary annual dinner dance on the 17th July 2010 in the splendid surroundings of the Grange Holborn hotel in the vicinity of legal London, for the seventh time in succession.
The occasion was well attended by members of both professions and was graced by His Excellency Justice Nihal Jayasinghe, the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka and Mrs Indira Jayasinghe. Harendra de Silva QC. President of ASLLUK and Dr Rasieka Jayatunga President of SLMDA welcomed the guests.
The crowds swayed to the music by ‘Sky High’ and the melodies of Mariazelle Goonetilleke, the special guest artiste, of ‘Kandy Lamissi’ fame brought in the sweet memories of the yester years. The banquet of traditional Sri Lankan foods served in an elegant setting, was fit enough to satisfy the most discerning palate.
The Dinner-Dance was preceded by the traditional battle of the professions which took place on the same day at the Harrow School Cricket Grounds. Lawyers team was led by Manoj Warnapala whilst the doctors team was captained by Dr Gunasiri Ambepitiya. Whilst the men battled on the field the women took to the grounds as Dr Ruvini Senasinghe led the first ever Law-Medical Netball Team for doctors and Ruwanthie Warnapala led the lawyers Netball Team. In spite of the valiant attempts by both lawyers and the doctors to outmanoeuvre each other, the cricket match was a draw and the netball match was won by the doctors. Chief organizer of ASLLUK, Wasantha Tennakoon says the event was a success.
